About the breed

Country of origin of the breed is Japan. It was named after the ancient province on the island of Shikoku. The resident dogs were not large so the natives interbred them with newcomers’ moloss breeds from Europe; with the German Dane, English Mastiff, St. Bernard, and English bulldog.

Few other breeds deserve credit for current appearance and character of the Tosa: Bull terrier, Japanese Akita and even German pointer. Current appearance of the breed dates from the first quarter of the 20th century.

During World War II Tosa almost extinct, but several top specimens were rescued and transported to the north of Japan, where there was not a lot of war activity. Except their common shortend name „Tosa“, you can hear others, such as: Tosa Inu, Tosa Ken, Tosa touken, Sumo dog...
